Hilarious video! I’ve always wondered why Mary (Jesus’s mom) nagged him to do something. I suppose it’s just human/mom nature to want your child to look important or special to others. But it’s a little strange coming from her. She knew from the beginning that he wasn’t just an ordinary kid and then adult.
I've always wondered that as well. I still do. Jesus always seemed a little perturbed when she told Him about the wine. Jesus was perturbed alot in the Gospels, but can we blame Him? If life on this earth can irritate us, imagine what it did to Jesus.
I was going to ask "What did I just watch???" Even having read the explanation. But when I clicked "like", my Internet went down. It's back up, finally, but I hope that wasn't another Sign.
A miracle! You know when I click on likes or make comments on other stacks usually a religious comment nobody wants to hear anyways my computer always ends up rebooting itself or some other weirdness always happens right at that moment. I know it's the dark side messing with me. Pug and I always ask God before we do another animation in the Jesus series whether He hates what we are doing and if so, let us know and we'll stop. We've never had our computers shut down once in doing them. I take that as a good sign. I hope God laughs, we are staying true to the Gospels, just adding a modern, Looney-tunes spin to them.
Clever and funny. Thank you. I've never properly understood this first miracle, its purpose or its meaning, or why it is recorded. That it is recorded is in itself fascinating. It is described as a literal event, though one wonders whether Jesus created an olfactory and glossopharyngeal hallucination? (cranial n. of smell and taste).
ClearMiddle has a great explanation. The question I always have is why water to wine? At a wedding as the first miracle? I've read many interpretations, and still really don't get it. I think it is something more geared to Jesus' time and practices. Weddings were VERY important back then, unlike now. Whole towns were invited to weddings. Maybe this was the way to get publicity at the start of his ministry. Then there is the Blessed Virgin Mary's statement to Jesus, as if she knows what Jesus can do. All still mysterious to me.
I am grateful for CM exegesis. I take as read. I accept the mystery and uncertainty, and I acknowledge that 'scientific' dissection is an ill suited tool for analysis of faith. Your erudite reference to historical/cultural context seems incredibly relevant, though the 'message' must surely transcend this and be generalisable?
Some things will remain mysteries for the time being. As to water into wine, water has its symbolism and so does wine ("the fruit of the vine" -- they weren't drinking grape juice). There may be an answer in that somewhere, but my day is out of control and I have at least three hours to go before I can stop and think. Maybe later.
This miracle is known as the first of seven signs in the Gospel of John. It is part of a sequence in which John the Baptist is introduced beginning in John 1:15 and gives his testimony to what he had been told and had seen (John 1:32-34), the first disciples are called (John 1:35-51), and then Jesus performs this miracle (John 2:1-11). The significance is given in verse 11:
John 2:11 (NASB2020) "What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him."
That is the given "why". It marked the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, and of the "signs of the times" (Matthew 16:1-4, Luke 12:54-56) which were the fulfillment of prophecies not formerly understood. Those with "eyes to see" and "ears to hear" would recognize what was taking place.
We live in a different time, but it is not without its signs. As before, prophecies that were not not understood, or that were only partly understood, are becoming clear as they are fulfilled. Those with "eyes to see" and "ears to hear" will recognize the meaning of the present signs.
Mother knows best. Jesus wouldn’t let anyone disrespect the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

We're fools already (biblically speaking), so why not a little loony too? Please continue!
