So what's going on in the video above and why do some people call it a miracle?
First, what is the Eucharist and why is there a white circle in that sun dial looking thing? You Catholics do the weirdest things.
Well, the Eucharist, meaning “thanksgiving” in Greek, commemorates Jesus’ Last Supper. During this meal our Savior instituted the sacrament of His Body and Blood. He did this in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the ages and to entrust to the Church a memorial of his death and resurrection. The Institution of the Eucharist is written down in the four Gospels below:
Now, everyday in the Catholic Church, the Eucharist (aka Communion) is celebrated. But instead of bread loaves being distributed, the Church uses little wheat, unleavened disks called “hosts.” In the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), these hosts are distributed only by the priest and the faithful only receive the hosts kneeling and on the tongue. Why? Because most Catholics believe the transformed bread and wine are truly the Body and Blood of Christ and are not merely symbols. When Christ said “This is my body” and “This is my blood,” the bread and wine are transubstantiated. Though the bread and wine appear the same to our human faculties, they are actually the real body and blood of Jesus. For traditional Catholics this little host is God and reverence must be shown by kneeling and having only Consecrated Priests handle the hosts.
Okay, good, so what is that sun dial thing and what is that white disc in the center? The sun dial thing is what is called a monstrance, meaning “to show” in Latin. This religious vessel traces back to the Middle Ages and is used for Eucharistic Adoration outside of Mass. What that means is that the monstrance is used to put on display a large consecrated Host for those present to adore and venerate. The monstrance is meant to highlight and draw attention to the king of kings, Jesus Christ, present in a real and substantial way under the appearances of bread. This is why a monstrance is typically gold and ornamented in a special way, in recognition of the divine mystery it holds and reveals. In a nutshell, Jesus is that white disc in the sun-ray gold contraption.
That’s all well and good Napoleon, let’s skip the rest of the Sunday Bible Study and get to the miracle. What happened in Mexico, and what am I seeing?
According to the Priest Father Carlos Spahn, on July 23, 2022, at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in the Mexican state of Jalisco, after Mass he revealed the monstrance for adoration. He says:
We exposed the Blessed Sacrament; I said the prayers for the exposition, and when I got up to go to the sacristy, this began to happen.” The priest continued, “Some people saw it [and] couldn’t believe what they were seeing, and we have at least two pieces of footage.
What did they see?
The Holy Eucharist (white center disc) looks as though it is oscillating within its monstrance during Adoration, keeping the rhythm of a beating heart. Let’s look at the video again. Do you see it? It does look like something beating or a reflection flashing on and off.
So what do I think? From the grainy video, the first thing that crossed my mind was that it looks like a reflection of cop car’s flashing light bouncing off the glass of the monstrance (the Consecrated Host is usually behind glass in a monstrance). Like maybe the door to the Church was open and there was a cop car parked out there, with it’s blinking light bouncing off the monstrance. I guess that would be easy to confirm. However, some people say the Host was inflated like a heart, and not flat as it usually is, and beats in the rhythm like a heart. The video, to me is unclear, as that can still just be a reflection effect of the glass.
What do you think?
If the Consecrated Host is actually beating like a heart, then yes it is a miracle. God exists, Jesus exists and is the Son of God. I already know this without miracles, because of Faith. As Jesus says † “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” † (John 20:29) Still, miracles exist, and can be a great conversion tool for those who don’t believe or are wavering in their beliefs. God still provides miracles in this world for us to see. We just don’t care. A beating wafer in a sun dial - pishaw! Big deal! Show me God on earth and maybe I’ll care, says most of mankind. Well He did, 2000 years ago, and we didn’t care then.
For those of us who want a little hope in this world, let’s accept the Mexican Miracle as what it is - God saying † “Hi, I’m here, I’m beating for you, for all eternity.” † Even if the cop car reflection is the basis of it.
At a certain point in life, faith becomes conviction and one is beyond doubt. If this event brought one soul to God, that is the true miracle.
I do believe that miracles happen every day to many people around the world so that we humans can sustain our physical and spiritual life and draw closer to God. We should never underestimate the power of God and discount events that we may not understand. I try to keep an open mind so as not to miss something significant.
