A lot of people think getting into heaven is about being a good person. If we help others, go to church, and try to be kind, that should be enough, right? But the Bible tells a different story. It says that heaven isn't something we can earn—it’s a gift that only comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
Why Good Works Aren’t Enough
Isaiah 64:6 says that even our best actions—our “righteous acts”—are like filthy rags. That means no matter how hard we try, our good deeds will never be perfect in God’s eyes. He is holy, and His standard is complete perfection. The truth is, we all mess up. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
If heaven was a reward for good people, none of us would make it. But God, in His love, gave us another way—through Jesus.
The Cross Changes Everything
Jesus lived a perfect life. He never sinned. Then He took the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross. In John 19:30, He said, “It is finished.” That means the full price for our sins was paid. We don’t have to work for forgiveness—it’s already done.
Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us clearly: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Faith That Shows Up in Our Actions
Even though good works can’t save us, real faith always shows up in our actions. If we truly believe in Jesus, our lives will change. We’ll want to love others, forgive, and live in a way that honors God. James 2:17 says, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
Jesus also said in Matthew 16:24, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Taking up our cross daily means making choices that show we follow Jesus—dying to selfish desires, loving others, and obeying God even when it’s hard. These are the kinds of good works that come from real faith, not to try and earn salvation.
What About “Lord, Lord”?
In Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus gives a serious warning. He says that not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter heaven—only those who do the will of the Father. He even says some people will claim they did miracles and good works in His name, but He will tell them, “I never knew you.” That’s because their actions weren’t coming from a real relationship with Him.
It’s one thing to call Jesus “Lord” with your mouth—it’s another thing to make Him the true Ruler of your life. Giving God a title is easy; surrendering your heart is where real transformation happens. Jesus wants more than lip service—He wants obedience, love, and loyalty. He wants your life to reflect that He’s not just your Savior, but your King.
The Bottom Line
Heaven isn’t for “good people.” It’s for forgiven people—those who trust in Jesus and what He did on the cross. When we believe in Him, we’re saved by grace. And from that point on, our lives begin to show that faith through love, obedience, and service.
Call to Repentance:
If you’ve been trying to earn your way into heaven, it’s time to stop striving and start surrendering. Today can be the day everything changes. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Don’t wait for a better moment. Turn from your sin, believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross, and receive the gift of eternal life. He is calling—respond to Him today.
