It’s a sobering question but lets be honest with ourselves–what if God didn’t have mercy? What if our sins earned us death with no warning. No second chances. No love and all authoritarianism. No compassion and all wrath.
It’s easy to complain when God doesn’t meet our expectations. But what if—just for a minute—we flipped the script?
What if God wasn’t merciful?
Gods Who Don’t Care
There’s a moment in Thor: Love and Thunder that should stop you cold. Gorr is begging Rapu, the sun god, for help.
And what does Rapu do?
He throws fruit at him. Literally
No mercy. No compassion. Just mockery. Like a schoolyard bully with a god complex.
That scene may seem ridiculous. But it’s a perfect picture of what a world without mercy looks like.
Now imagine if our God acted like that.
The God We Deserve vs. The God We Have
We’ve all sinned. Repeatedly.
“For the wages of sin is death…” — Romans 6:23
If God dealt with us fairly—no grace, no second chances—we’d be crushed. Erased. Done.
But instead of mocking our weakness, God took on our weakness.
Instead of throwing food, He threw open heaven.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us…” Ephesians 2:4
God’s mercy is not a side feature, It’s His heart.
Our Misconception That God Is Not Loving
One of the most dangerous lies we believe is that God must not love us—especially when things hurt. We assume His silence means rejection or abandonment.
But God’s love isn’t proven by how smooth our life is.
It’s proven by a broken body on a wooden cross.
That’s real love. Love that doesn’t throw fruit—it spills blood.
Every Breath Is Mercy and Mercy is Tied to Love
If you woke up today, it’s because of mercy.
If you’ve failed this week and still felt conviction instead of condemnation—that’s mercy.
God doesn’t toss fruit at the broken.
He bore our brokenness.
He entered our pain.
He bled for the people mocking Him.
You’re still here because God is still merciful. Still Loving. Still Compassionate. Still forgiving.
“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown.” Luke 7: 47
What If He Really Was Like Rapu?
Let’s just sit with this for a second:
If God responded to our prayers the way Rapu did in that scene
and just mocked and laughed at us…..we’d be doomed.
But praise God—we don’t serve a myth.
We serve the Living God and He’s full of mercy.
Conclusion: Don’t Take Mercy for Granted
If God wasn’t merciful, none of us would have a chance. But because He is, we have hope, breath, and the chance to begin again today.
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” —Lamentations 3:22-23
Stop asking why He isn’t doing more. Start thanking Him that He didn’t do what He could’ve.

Call to Repentance
If you’ve been trying to earn your way into heaven, it’s time to stop striving and start surrendering. Today can be the day everything changes. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Don’t wait for a better moment. Turn from your sin, believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross, and receive the gift of eternal life. He is calling—respond to Him today.
